You Have The Right To Use The Toner Cartridge of Your Choice!
Can Using Compatible / Remanufactured / Off-Brand / Generic cartridges void the warranty???
The answer is: NO!
It is illegal to require or force the owner of a printer to use only OEM brand supplies. Requiring that is a violation of the Sherman and Clayton Antitrust Act.
An example of this issue was brought before the US Supreme Court in 1936 and it involved IBM vs. the United States. At that time, IBM leased data processing machines (Punch cards) to customers with the requirement that they only use the tabulating cards manufactured by IBM. Their customers were threatened with termination of their lease if they used cards produced by other manufacturers. As decided by the US Supreme Court, this requirement in IBM's lease agreement was held to constitute a "tying agreement" and was found to be in violation of the antitrust laws. US Code - Title 15, Chapter 50, Sections 2302.
Don't be intimidated by sales or service people. Let them know that they can NOT legally require that you purchase cartridges or any other ink and toner supplies from them. In order to make this kind of requirement, they must demonstrate and prove that other brands are incompatible to their printer.
Use this information to anyone who insists on voiding a warranty or charging you for a service call because they found that you were not using the OEM brand cartridges. Stand up for your right of free choice of vendor because you are acting within the law. Your printer service people are aware of lower priced supplies, so threatening to void warranties and service call charges are their only defense.
